Manual SMS Sign-Up in In-App Browsers

What is it?

When shoppers access your Attentive sign-up unit through Facebook's or TikTok's in-app browser on iOS, they see a manual phone number entry form instead of Attentive’s patented two-tap flow.

Here's why: Both platforms don't reliably support the patented two-tap flow in their in-app browsers. With this feature enabled, shoppers enter their phone number directly into a form, then reply to a confirmation text to opt in—no app switching or redirects needed.

When does this apply?

This experience activates automatically when:

  • A shopper is using TikTok's or Facebook's native mobile app
  • They click through to your site (including links in bio, captions, or ads)
  • They attempt to sign up for SMS via an Attentive sign-up unit

On other browsers and Android traffic, shoppers experience the standard two-tap flow.

What does the shopper experience?

  1. They see a sign-up form asking for their phone number
  2. They enter their number and submit
  3. They receive a confirmation text and reply to confirm their opt-in
  4. They're subscribed to your SMS list

Everything happens in the browser—no app switching, making it fast and frictionless.

How does this work?

Standard SMS sign-up flow:

  • Shopper taps phone number field → directed to Messages app → receives SMS → replies to confirm

Manual entry flow (TikTok/Facebook optimized):

  • Shopper enters phone number directly into the form on the page
  • Receives SMS confirmation text
  • Replies to the confirmation text to complete opt-in
  • Everything stays in the browser

Note: You can opt-in to Manual sign ups for Tiktok or Facebook or both. You are not required to select both.

How to enable it

Once enabled, this feature activates automatically for all TikTok and Facebook in-app traffic. No additional setup needed per platform.

Depending on what you see in your Attentive account, follow these steps:

Option 1: If you see a "Preview manual entry fallback" option, follow these steps

Can I customize this?

This feature uses all the same customization options as your regular sign-up units—form styling, colors, fonts, copy, and more. For detailed customization instructions, see Design a sign-up unit.
